A meta analysis of 29 high quality clinical trials with a total of 17,922 patients has concluded that acupuncture is significantly more effective than sham acupuncture than true acupuncture in reducing chronic (longterm) pain. This rules out the placebo effect.
Even larger benefits were found compared to usual care. And for patients with worse baseline scores the effect was greater. In other words patients with higher pain levels had a greater drop in their pain.
